My iPod
I've just chucked in my MD collection for a shiny new 4thGen 20Gb Apple iPod, with the ability to play 3230 songs at 192kbps AAC format (ave. song length 4.2min - to check how many tracks you can store on your own iPod using this calculator). If you have one, I suggest you also get:
- Better headphones (large selection out there - I use a pair of Sony XBA-2 balanced armature earbuds with Comply eartips and some Sennheiser PX100 headphones)
- Headphone remote (then sell the 2nd set of spare headphones supplied if you want)
- iSkin evo2 - the best case there is imo (I've got the "Ghost" Aqua Glow in the dark one)
- iTrip - made by Griffin and allows you to broadcast your tunes to any nearby radio
- iTalk - also made by Griffin. Allows you to record notes onto your iPod
- Car Charger - got mine free with my FM transmitter (iTrip)
- iPoDonut - Japanese import sticky that protects the click wheel from scratches (also glows in the dark)
- Hi-Fi analogue interconnect with a dual phono to stereo plug adapter to connect your iPod to your Hi-Fi
My Portable BT Speakers
I recently had a JBL Xtreme to take to work:
This was a good bluetooth speaker that could give you up to 12hrs of battery time when working, but will unfortunately very quickly degenerate into not working properly. The sound is definitely not High Fidelity, but plenty good enough for taking to work and using all day whilst out and about with decent bass when you first listen to it. The battery life deteriorated to 4-5hrs within a few months and then just after the warranty ran out, the charging circuit broke meaning it wouldn't charge the battery correctly. This means you lose all portability and have to leave it plugged in (the large size means it wasn't too portable in the first place but this failure makes it worse). Searching on the internet I've found this to be a well known problem that JBL tries it's hardest to ignore leaving hundreds of people with broken portability just as the warranty runs out - well done JBL (slow clap)...well done! A year or two later, the (what was once great) bass takes a dive and starts distorting on many tracks. The final straw was the new behaviour when connecting to your phone - after connecting the whole unit turns off. This means you have to turn it on again and (because auto-pairing has also broken) re-pair it again. Then it might turn off again. Sometimes you need to repeat this process 3 or 4 times before it behaves itself and stays connected. This apparent logic board failure is the last in a long line of failures from this cheaply made, overpriced POS. I wouldn't touch JBL again with a bargepole...
.... hence onto a superior device for 1/3 the cost but about 3x better sound, the W-King T9:
Bass is deeper (not just mid and high bass like the JBL - low bass too thanks to the bass port as c.f. "bass radiators" that most other portable speakers use), sound is clearer without being fatiguing and I again have 13hrs battery life (will basically last me a whole shift). It goes louder too - much louder @105dB. The only 2 negatives are the even bigger size and also the flashing lights (not a fan but thankfully you can turn them off completely with 5 button presses). Hard wearing plastic and ideal for keeping in my locker at work and using when needed.
